Sail for Hope Sail Newport Staff SAILORS RACE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR SOLDIERS, NEWPORT HARBORMASTER AND SAFETY AT SEA NEWPORT – October, 2, 2004, Over $25,000 was raised by sailors on 73 boats Saturday in the 2004 Sail for Hope Regatta. The event gathered over 400 sailors from five states who competed on Narragansett Bay in what is traditionally the “last blast” for the Newport sailing community.
Three charities were designated to receive the proceeds from the event. The donations will be earmarked for the American Red Cross of Rhode Island Armed Forces Family Assistance Services, the Jamie Boeckel Memorial Fund for Safety at Sea and the Newport Harbormaster’s Emergency Equipment Fund. Seven classes of boats were given a downwind start to race approximately 19 nautical miles around Jamestown. The steady 8-10 knot south easterly continued towards Noon for several other classes including non-spinnaker PHRF boats and J/22 racing in a one-design scoring division. The latter classes navigated around Gould Island and back to Newport Harbor. on a 14 mile course. “It was a busy day for the racers” PRO Sue Reilly said, “We had moderate wind but there were three cruise ships and a tug and barge surrounding our PHRF starts.” Once all the boats navigated the traffic and around Conanicut and Gould Islands, though, “It was a spectacular sight seeing the boats all finish in Newport Harbor on a crisp fall day.” Steve Parks (Middletown, RI) and his team on Flying Fish won the Overall Sail For Hope PHRF Trophy for the best corrected time around Conanicut Island. Chris Titcomb (Framingham, MA) won the Beach Cat Class and Mohamad Farzan (Newport, RI) won the J/22 Division with his Team Silver Lining. Other top finishers in the PHRF Divisions included Craig & Peggy Forbes on Haraka (Warwick, RI). Skip Mattos on Audacious (Bristol, RI), The crew of Jest lead by Helmsman Phip Hallowell (Middletown, RI), Bill Titus (Newport, RI) on Phoebe’s Phling, The team of Mike Kehew and Mark Nannini (Middletown, RI) on In theory and Daniel Meyers (Boston, MA) who captured first place in his division on Numbers. (Full racing results below). Organizers emphasized the spirit of the regatta with a custom designed carbon fiber fund-raising trophy made locally by Hall Spars, New England Boatworks and a Blue Yankee crew member. The Sail for Hope Fund-raising trophy this year was awarded to the crew of Blue Yankee who raised the most funds for their designated charity-The Jamie Boeckel Memorial Fund for Safety at Sea.
