October 4, 2008 0930 Competitor Welcome Announcement on VHF 05 1055 Course Signals made on RC Boat 1100 First Warning for Class 1 1630 Sail For Hope party at the Newport Shipyard*
*Competitors are welcome to raft up at the Newport Shipyard for the Post-Race party at no charge. The shipyard can be hailed on VHF 09. Alternatively, sailors are welcome to raft at Sail Newport’s Alofsin piers for no charge. The Oldport launch will be running from Ft. Adams.
The 2008 Sail For Hope will help raise funds for: The Newport Harbormaster's Emergency Equipment Fund, Local high school sailing teams, including: Rogers High School, Portsmouth High School and North Kingstown High School and the Rhode Island Red Cross. Please join us in this "Last Blast" around Jamestown to support these charities.
Sail For Pride and Sail For Hope have raised over $300,000 for different charities since the 2001 event. Sail For Pride was created in the wake of the terrorist attacks on our country to support those who suffered losses on September 11, 2001. $110,000 was raised by sailors during Sail for Pride. Since then, Sail For Hope (we retired the name Sail For Pride) has raised $115,000 for Katrina Relief in 2005, and nearly $90,000 in funding for 3rd party charities. Those helped by Sail for Hope include: The Jamie Boeckel Foundation, The Newport Harbormaster Emergency Equipment Fund, The Rhode Island Chapter of the American Red Cross, The United Way, Hurricane Katrina Relief, The NY Firefighters Widows and Children's Fund, the RI Firefighters Widow's and Children's Fund and support of the 2007 Olympic Sailing Trials in Rhode Island.
