2008 HALLOWEEN HOWL WRAPS YOUTH SAILING SEASON
In years past, the annual Halloween Howl youth regatta has been sailed in lots of wind, waves and even morning snowflakes. This year’s group of hearty New England youth sailors came braced for fall New England weather but enjoyed a rare weekend of sun and warm temperatures for the fall event.
On Saturday the southeasterly stayed steady at 15-20 with gusts over 20 – perfect Opti surfing conditions! The Opti sailors held their own and completed a variety of four great races including triangles, windward/leeward and Gold Cup courses.
Sunday’s warm conditions started out in a light northwesterly of 3-6 knots but the wind turned around to a piping south-southwesterly seabreeze that built to 12 knots. The Opti Blue, Red and White sailors completed three more races to bring their series to seven.
A fleet of Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 sailors joined the Optis on Sunday for some fun fall racing. Laser 4.7s and Laser Radials completed four races.
Competitors included youth sailors from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Wining their fleets were Laser 4.7 skipper Anoush Longerstaey (Lexington, MA), Laser Radial sailor Norbert Mongeon (North Smithfield, RI), Opti Blue Fleeter Greg Fligor (Weston, MA) who also won top Opti sailor overall, Opti White Sailor Henry Marshall (Auburndale, MA), and winning Opti Red Fleet sailor Fiona Paine (Barrington, RI).
