REGATTA REPORT, Saturday, June 26, 2010
Day 2 started off hot and sticky. It was humid, but right when we got off the docks, and into the channel there was a slight cool breeze. The wind was blowing a solid 8-10 knots from the south, and we were pretty sure that was going to be consistent for the day.
Once again the race committee was on time, with the first warning signal at 1100. The breeze diminished up until about 1 minute till the start, and everyone was a good boat-length off the line with about 20 seconds to go. Realizing this, "Q" took full advantage of the opportunity and decided to go full trim, and port tack the fleet. It worked well, as they hit the line full speed and led the charge to the favored right side of the course. After the start, Gavin Brady was belly chuckling out of pure astonishment, that he had just port tacked the entire Melges 32 fleet. They were able to hold the lead all around the course, but strategy from Anthony Kotoun helped "Bronco" catch up, giving "Q" a run for their money right at the finish. Both boats split to opposite sides on the run, and it was a very close finish. "Q" triumphed and took their second win of the regatta.
In race 2, again the right side of the course was the best place to be in the first 2/3rds of the beat, but it seemed better to get back to the left on the last 1/3rd to get some building pressure and a slight lefty.
At the Weather mark, there was a pile up, as a majority of the boats were coming in on the starboard lay line. It looked a little dicey for some of the boats that got forced left early in the beat, but they managed to slip in at the top mark without any fouls. "Full throttle" launched on the right hand side, and from there they never looked back. "Q" solidfied their lead in the regatta and chalked up another win.
Competitors knew Race 3 was sure to be slow as the wind was dying. But again the right side was the place to be, and Andrew Campbell knew this sending his team on "Ninkasi" to the right side of the course, and into the lead. From there it was easy for them, as they held their lead on the run, and sent it back to the right side of the course, to took the win.
REGATTA REPORT, FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 2010
Well today was a long one! The Race Committee announced the racing area at 0900 to be offshore. Interestingly enough, the wind was blowing from the Northwest at about 8 knots. In spite of a dismal outlook for wind and light conditions, the race committee was on time with their warning signal, and pulled it off to start the regatta on schedule at 1100. With the Northwest breeze, the race committee was feeling some pressure to get a race off, as the land was quickly heating up. Sea breeze was on its way, and the first start was off.
Then...GENERAL RECALL! PRO Tom Duggan was quick to roll right into the next sequence. and the second start of the day went smoothly and "Q" won the pin of the starting line, with 3 boats over at the start. The wind was dying quickly, and favoring the right side of the course. Left seemed to be looking promising, but it was "Bronco" to round the weather mark in first.
On the run, however, the wind had clocked left, and there was a change of course. The committee decided to shorten the course, and have an upwind finish.
Poor Melges 24s, having to sail in 3 knots for the last upwind finish. Ugh! Brutal! With the wind dropping to 2 knots everyone dropped sails, and drifted around for about 30-45 minutes before the sea breeze finally filled in.
Race 2 was started pin end favored, and the left side looking to be the way to go. Everybody timed the start very poor, and the closest boat was still a ½ length off the start. "Q" won the pin end, and raced for the left side of the course. Coming back about 20 lengths shy of layline, they were able to cross the fleet, and never looked back.
Race 3 was committee favored, and boy was there a pile up at the boat. Wind was about 7 knots, and the leaders came out middle left at the top mark. "Atlantica," "Star," and "Q" were the first to the mark. Positions seemed to stay relatively the same throughout the run. On the last beat "Star" rounded the left gate, flopped over, and rode a private puff launching them into the lead and on to win the third race.
Hopefully boat handling can be tested tomorrow with some more wind, but it was a good day of racing. -Cy Thompson
