What started in 2001 after the terrorism attacks on the U.S. is now an annual tradition for Newport sailors. The Sail for Hope is scheduled for Saturday, September 29. This is not just a sailboat race but an opportunity for local boaters to show their patriotism and race funds for those in need.

The three charities this year include: Warrior Sailing, The RI Red Cross and the E.O.S. “Tad” Sanchez Fund for Youth Sailing at Sail Newport. The boats will sail around Conanicut Island starting outside Newport Harbor with the Initial Warning Signal at 1100. Watch for the boats to fly their Ensign in a show of patriotism for Americans.

Boat 22′ and up are invited to participate. Sail Newport encourages all boats, power and sail, to sign up. The race is open to those who are regularly cruisers and the Organization will assign a rating. Powerboats are encourage to sign up, raise funds and cruise around the island.

The party at the Newport Shipyard is open to boaters who enter the event, and to guests who may purchase wristbands at $30 each at the front entrance. Door proceeds are split between the three charities as are entry fees. The Newport Shipyard throws a great cookout for guests and the cash bar is deeply discounted.
