J/22 weeknight racing
Enjoy fleet racing and the benefits of sailing and racing–without the headaches of boat ownership!
Newport YC is host to the series’, and runs the actual racing in the waters between Rose and Goat Islands. One to three races around the “cans” are run each night weather permitting:
- Tuesdays: Spinnaker
- Wednesdays: Non-spinnaker
As with any Sail Newport rental, the skipper (or anyone who will be driving on a race night) must take a check-out as well as a short, written, rules test before the first night of racing, which is included in the charter fee. There must be a minimum of three sailors on board for Tuesday night (spinnaker) racing, and two for Wednesday night (non-spinnaker). You must be a member of Sail Newport to charter for either the spring or summer series, and we encourage all skippers to encourage their crew to become members as well!
The Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and online racing registration is posted on the Newport YC Racing website.
2020 Charter Rates
$490 to charter a J/22 for the series
$350 to charter a J/22 for the weeknight racing series
- You must be a Sail Newport member to charter a boat.
- All participants chartering a boat must register with Newport YC and pay the appropriate RC fee before the first race of the series.
- There are twelve boats available for the summer series. If 13 teams indicate interest in either the Tuesday or Wednesday night series, a rotation will be set up and the charter rates will be adjusted accordingly. If 14 of more teams indicate interest on or before July 6, 2020, a drawing for the 13 spots will be held.
*The “Open Card” (purchased separately) allows the holder to use the Sail Newport Fleet of J/22s and Rhodes 19s anytime during the course of the season (May – October) that boats are available for a onetime fee $850. The holder may not pass use of the card to any other individual, and must be present to take a boat out. Boats may be reserved in advance during any rental period except for the afternoon 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. rental block on Saturdays and Sundays. If a boat is available at the start of one of those two rental blocks, an Open Card holder may use it, they just cannot displace a fee paying customer. There is a $100 surcharge per race series, for Open Card holders.
