Sail Newport is please to announce that Gary Knapp has joined Sail Newport as Regatta Director. Knapp will direct Sail Newport’s regatta management, including the recruitment of local, national, and world-championship regattas, on the water course management and volunteer recruitment.
“Sail Newport is a unique organization that provides access to sailing for a diverse group of people. I look forward to giving back to a sport that has provided me with many amazing opportunities,” Knapp says.
Knapp joins Sail Newport after almost two decades with the Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club. He has ties to Rhode Island as a graduate of U.R. I. and St. George’s, having participated on their sailing teams.
As a junior sailor on Long Island Sound, Knapp has a storied sailing history. He pursued several Olympic dinghy campaigns in the Flying Dutchman and Tornado catamaran classes. Those pursuits brought him to many U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia for racing and Olympic Trails events.
Knapp has also sailed on many large keelboats. In addition, he managed racing programs for a NY 40 and a Holland 47′ in which he entered both in the SORC and distance racing events. Knapp’s keelboat experience includes racing a Nelson Marek 50′ under the IMS racing rule.
