Fall Youth Racing Clinic Series

Intro to High School Sailing

This clinic series is designed as an introductory course to racing, with an emphasis on sailing the high school/collegiate 420. Middle school and high school sailors with strong foundational sailing skills will learn advanced boat-handling drills and techniques, along with skills to make the simplified 420 go fast around a race course. Tactics and strategy will also be introduced with an emphasis on the short-course races high school sailing is known for. Pairings will be switched each day and sailors will be asked to learn both helm and crew positions. If you want to build your racing experience and get a head start on the spring high school sailing season, this clinic series is for you.

Advanced C420 Racing

This group will sail in C420s, utilizing the trapeze and spinnaker to focus on speed and big course racing. The ideal sailor for this clinic series has at least a summer of racing experience in the boat, so they have proficiency in both positions, and have the ability to race aggressively in most conditions. Most sailors will come with their own boat and partner, but help on both fronts can be provided. (Reach out to Nick Ewenson before registering) Part of this course includes all-day coaching for Sail Newport’s Halloween Howl Regatta on October 23 and 24.

Laser Racing

Sail Newport is committed to help junior laser racing continue to grow in New England. This clinic series will have a mix of training and regattas and is designed for the experienced laser racer. Ideally, sailors will have a summer of racing experience in boat, but experienced racers in other classes may be considered. Most sailors will bring their own boats, but Sail Newport has a few charters available. Like our other clinic series this fall, training sessions will take place one weekend afternoon per week. This group will participate in Sail Newport’s Halloween Howl and we’re also hoping to race at Cedar Point YC’s Fontelieu Regatta on 10/2-3 (tbd).
