Adult Instruction

Group Instruction

Sail Newport offers weekly group adult learn-to-sail, adult intermediate and adult advanced classes either in weekday sessions or weekends, from mid May through August. In the fall, group instruction is offered on weekends late August through October.

Within each session, students of the same skill level work with an instructor, with a maximum ratio of 3:1. Classes are taught on our fleet of J/7s. All levels of skill are offered each session, providing you with the flexibility to take as many sessions as you wish, when you wish, and make progress towards your goals at your own pace.

Please also note that group sailing instruction takes place rain or shine.

Sail Newport reserves the right to change, reschedule or cancel any classes at any time.

Weekdays
  • Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday (you sign-up for a session that meets each of these days, in a week, not for three consecutive Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, etc.)
  • Morning Session 9:30-11:30 a.m. (first Morning Session will be June 9 – 11, last Sept 8 – 10)
  • Evening Session 6:00-8:00* p.m. (first Evening Session will be May 19 – 21, last Aug 25 – 27*)
    • *The August 18 – 20 and 25 – 27 evening sessions will run 5:00 – 7:00 pm each night due to sunset times.
Weekends
  • Saturday/Sunday (you sign-up for a session that meets each of these days, in a week, not for two consecutive Saturdays, etc.)
  • Saturday/Sunday 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (first Weekend Session will be May 23 – 24, last October 3 – 4) 
Weekends
  • Saturday & Sunday 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
  • August 22 – 23, 29 – 30, September 5 – 6, 12 – 13, 19 – 20, 26 – 27 and October 3 – 4

2026 Adult Group Lesson Rates

The rate shown is per person, per session (a session being six hours of instruction, max. 3 student to 1 instructor ratio)

Members

  • Weekday sessions: $210.00
  • Weekend sessions: $255.00

Members who sign-up for a group session 7 days or more in advance will receive a $10 discount off the weekday or weekend rate.

Non-Members

  • Weekday sessions: $255.00
  • Weekend sessions: $318.00

Private Instruction

We also offer private instruction, with certified instructors, for all skill levels. Private lessons provide a one-on-one experience, and work well as a confidence builder, introduction to the sport of sailing, or are a perfect way to focus on improving specific skills and experience.

Private lessons are typically taught in 2 hour (min.) blocks, scheduled at a time that is convenient for you, and based on instructor availability.

The minimum student age is 12 and older for 1:1 private instruction.

Rates are based on a 1:1 ratio. There is a fee for additional student(s). No charge for children under 14 who are “additional” students.
