Note from Eve Formisano, Sail Newport’s New Director of Development
I am so pleased to have joined the Sail Newport team and to have the opportunity to build upon the 35+ years of success the organization has achieved in pursuit of its important mission.
As a native Rhode Islander, I fell in love with Narragansett Bay and the surrounding shore line at an early age. My sailing began in my early teens learning aboard the Mercury fleet at Bristol Yacht Club. Today, my children and I sail out of Barrington Yacht Club on Optis, Visions, 420s and aboard “Brizo,” a Beneteau 40.7.
I appreciate all that sailing offers – the sense of independence, accomplishment, communication, problem solving, quick thinking, grit, team work, assertiveness, discovery, learning and get-over-it-and-try-again. Of course, that’s in addition to the pure joy and good health that comes from being in nature, on the water, on the Bay.
Thank you for your philanthropic support of Sail Newport as your gifts ensure that we can provide affordable access to sailing, offer world class sailing education and host local, national and international sailing events.
Some of Sail Newport’s giving programs are evergreen, while others are campaign related, such as the building of our new facility, or capital needs related, such as replacing a fleet of boats, a set of sails or replacing docks.
Currently, 25% of our $2.2MM annual budget is derived from philanthropic support, and 75% comes from program and service fees. There are many ways you can support the mission of Sail Newport, here are a few:
The Annual Fund provides substantial unrestricted operational support for Sail Newport. Gifts received through our Annual Appeal and our fundraising events are the primary sources for the Annual Fund. Currently, the funds are used to provide general maintenance, staff compensation, as well as programmatic needs, such as our Financial Aid program and any unfunded expenses for the Pell Elementary 4th Grade Science and Sailing Program.
In 2016, Sail Newport publicly announced the $10MM Campaign for Blue Space, a three-part fundraising initiative designed to establish the financial foundation for the organization’s programmatic ambitions, and better serve the community by:
- Expanding public access sailing programs
- Broadening our marine education programming
- Building and maintaining the Mid-Park Marine Education and Recreation Center
To date, we have raised $$$ of our goal, and have been successful in making significant progress in each of the three priorities, including the launch of the Pell Elementary 4th Grade Science and Sailing Program and the completion of our beautiful new facility. If you are interested in making a campaign gift to Sail Newport, please select “Campaign for Blue Space” on the online donation form or contact us.
Matching gifts are company sponsored programs that allow employees to increase the size – and impact – of their gift by a “donation match” that comes from the company. Please contact your human resources department to learn if your company has a matching gift program, and if they do, thank you for completing and submitting any necessary forms.
In 2017, the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust granted Sail Newport a $500,000 challenge grant to support Sail Newport’s endowment. Sail Newport’s endowment provides long term financial health and stability to the organization, and this challenge means that the Trust will match every endowment gift and pledge received up to $500,000.
This challenge must be met by December 31, 2022. To date, we have received $192,000 in gifts which have been matched by the Trust for a grand total of $384,000.
If you are interested in helping us achieve our challenge goal, please contact us.
