Note from Eve Formisano, Sail Newport’s New Director of Development
Over the past few months, we have been so thankful for our donor community – individuals, families, businesses, and foundations – that has continued to support Sail Newport despite the health and economic challenges faced by so many due to COVID-19. I am confident in saying there has never been a time in the organization’s 37+ year history that we have needed your support more. So again, thank you.
Despite the significant financial impact of lost revenue due to COVID-19 related program cancellations and modifications, the Sail Newport team is committed to pursuing its mission this summer by providing affordable access to sailing, world-class sailing education, and a range of sailing events. We are in constant contact with the R.I. Department of Environmental Management and other state officials to ensure that Sail Newport is in full compliance with all COVID-19 protocols to protect the safety and health of all sailors, families, and staff.
Whether you are a long term supporter, or thinking about making your first gift, it is important for you to know how your donation will be used and its impact.
Some of Sail Newport’s giving programs are evergreen, such as our Annual Fund, which offsets general operating expenses and helps fund our financial aid programs, among other needs. Other programs are capital need-related, such as the building of our new facility, replacing a fleet of boats, sails, rigging, or a docking system. A spectrum of different giving options and vehicles are outlined below.
However you choose to give, know your gift matters and we are thankful.
Currently, 25% of our $2.2MM annual budget is derived from philanthropic support, and 75% comes from program and service fees. There are many ways you can support the mission of Sail Newport, here are a few:
The Annual Fund provides substantial unrestricted operational support for Sail Newport. Gifts received through our Annual Appeal and our fundraising events are the primary sources for the Annual Fund. Currently, the funds are used to provide general maintenance, staff compensation, as well as programmatic needs, such as our Financial Aid program and any unfunded expenses for the Pell Elementary 4th Grade Science and Sailing Program.
In 2016, Sail Newport publicly announced the $10MM Campaign for Blue Space, a three-part fundraising initiative designed to establish the financial foundation for the organization’s programmatic ambitions, and better serve the community by:
- Expanding public access sailing programs
- Broadening our marine education programming
- Building and maintaining the Mid-Park Marine Education and Recreation Center
To date, we have raised $$$ of our goal, and have been successful in making significant progress in each of the three priorities, including the launch of the Pell Elementary 4th Grade Science and Sailing Program and the completion of our beautiful new facility. If you are interested in making a campaign gift to Sail Newport, please select “Campaign for Blue Space” on the online donation form or contact us.
All gifts will be matched by the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust:
In 2017, the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust granted Sail Newport a $500,000 challenge grant to support Sail Newport’s endowment. Sail Newport’s endowment provides long term financial health and stability to the organization, and this challenge means that the Trust will match every endowment gift and pledge received up to $500,000. To date, we have received nearly $350,000 in gifts and matches. This challenge must be met by December 31, 2022.
Matching gifts are company sponsored programs that allow employees to increase the size – and impact – of their gift by a “donation match” that comes from the company. Please contact your human resources department to learn if your company has a matching gift program, and if they do, thank you for completing and submitting any necessary forms.
Sail Newport accepts gifts of stock and other asset donations. If you are considering making a gift of stock to the organization, please contact us.
Sail Newport accepts a variety of in-kind donations (non-cash donations, such as boat and other types of marine supplies). If you are interested in making an in-kind donation to Sail Newport, please contact us.
Sail Newport is able to accept and acknowledge gifts received in Memory/ Honor of an individual. If you are interested in making an in Memory/Honor of gift, please complete the online donation form or contact us.
Donors who include Sail Newport in their estate plans leave a lasting legacy to our organization. Please contact us to discuss your wishes to extend your support to Sail Newport beyond your lifetime.
