J/22 Weeknight Racing

J/7 Weeknight Racing 2026

2026 Charter Rates

The 2026 Season is here!!!

Enjoy fleet racing and the benefits of sailing and racing–without the headaches of boat ownership!

Newport YC is host to the series’, and runs the actual racing in the waters between Rose and Goat Islands. One to three races around the “cans” are run each night weather permitting:

  • Tuesdays: Spinnaker 2026 Series 1 May 26 – July 7 and Series 2 July 14 – August 25
  • Wednesdays: Non-Spinnaker 2026 Series 1 May 27 – July 8 and Series 2 July 15 – August 26

As with any Sail Newport rental, the skipper (or anyone who will be driving on a race night) must take a check-out sail with their team, as well as a short, written, rules test before the first night of racing, which is included in the charter fee. There must be a minimum of three sailors on board for Tuesday night (spinnaker) racing, and two for Wednesday night (non-spinnaker). You must be a member of Sail Newport to charter, and we ask all skippers to encourage their crew to become members as well!

Please see The Rules below for additional information about the program.

All available boats, for both Tuesday and Wednesday Evenings are chartered for both Series 1 and series 2 for the 2026 Season.  If you would like to be added to the J/7 Racing email list, please send me your email address.

The Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and online racing registration is posted on the Newport YC Racing website.

  1. You must be a Sail Newport member to charter a boat.
  2. All participants chartering a boat must register with Newport YC and pay the appropriate RC fee before the first race of the series you are participating in.
  3. There are eleven J/7s available for each summer series. If eleven or fewer teams submit a charter application for a particular series, everyone gets a boat. However, if by the end of the business day on April 10th, 12 or more teams indicate interest, a random drawing for the 11 boats in each series will be held.
  4. There will be a MANDATORY CHARTERER’s MEETING at Sail Newport at4:30 pm before the start of each series: Tuesday, March 26th and Wednesday, March 27th for the respective Series 1 charterers, and Tuesday, July 7th and Wednesday, July 8th for respective Series 2 charterers. Anyone chartering a boat will need to have the skipper, and ideally their crew, (or at least one crew member), in attendance. This meeting is separate from the required Check-Out sail which will need to be arranged in advance of the first night a charterer is racing, and must include the entire team (cannot just be the skipper).

Looking to crew or need crew?!

There are a couple of ways to connect with boats looking for crew, or find crew if you are short a sailor:

  • Post your name and preferred contact info in the Sail Newport Dock Office
  • “Walk the Docks”. Weeknight racing takes place Mondays (VX-One’s and Thistles), Tuesdays (Sail Newport spin J/7s and misc. PHRF and sport boats), Wednesdays (Sail Newport non-spin J/7s and Shields) and Thursdays (J/24s and J/80s). Most boats are launching each evening starting around 4 – 4:30 pm with last boats heading to the race area by 5:30 pm. Hang out at the Admiral’s Pier Docks (near the hoists) and meet teams. Someone is often looking for either a fill in for the night, or season.
