Sail Newport offers dockage for organized regattas, special events and rendezvous’ for both sail and power boats. The special event piers are located in Fort Adams State Park on the southwest side of Newport Harbor. Sail Newport maintains the piers and manages dockage for permitted special events only. There is no transient dockage or nightly dockage available unless the vessel is part of an event. The east side “T” Pier is reserved for intermodal transport and some quick pick-up and drops for commercial vessels. All commercial touches on the piers must be pre-arranged with Sail Newport and there is a fee for use.

There is a small tent located on the North side of the South Alofsin Pier during the summer season. This tent is used by the active Sail Newport Youth Program to provide sun/rain cover for young sailing students. On weekdays, a small Opti Class sails from the North side of the South Pier and uses the tent on the North Pier during most lunch hours and for a sailing school debrief around 4 p.m. each day.
Boats under 10′ are allowed to tie-up on the south side of the South Pier between the rip-rap and the floating dock only.
There is no full-time dockmaster service on the piers. Groups are expected to determine their own dockage placement for their vessels. Sail Newport will assist with the planning of your vessel dockage plan according to size and draft requirements. Each group and ultimately each boat captain has the responsibility to make certain their vessel is docked safely and adequately for the area and anticipated weather.
Parking for cars at Fort Adams is free between sunrise and sunset. Overnight parking passes may be purchased from the park rangers located in the Visitors Center (brick building on the left nearest the new North Pier).
Box trucks for parking and use during regattas may be charged an extra fee determined by Sail Newport for the special event.
Alcohol consumption is not allowed. Sail Newport manages the Sailing Center at the invitation of the State of Rhode Island–and this is a biggie–we all want to have a cold drink after sailing, but please do so at a permitted event or at a downtown bar.
Arrangements for trailers will be directed by the Sail Newport Regatta department. During most events, trailers are stored in the upper lot near the old Sail Newport main office. In some cases, trailers for bigger boats will be directed to store in the lower parking lot by the Alofsin Piers. Trailer parking will also be included in the special event plan as directed by Sail Newport in accordance with park manager’s office.
Overnight Security on the piers is also only available through a private service at additional cost to the rendezvous group or visiting regatta.
Fort Adams is a carry-in, carry out-park. Help keep the park beautiful by taking your own trash and recycling home.
In 2015 Sail Newport won several awards for sustainability, a green Volvo Ocean Race and for our efforts to reduce shore side and marine debris. Please join us to keep the park and ocean clean. For special events, arrangements can be made to rent a dumpster and recycling containers at an added fee.
