C420 Invitational Clinic
Sail Newport will team up with OneUnited to bring an advanced, C420-specific training clinic. Last year’s edition proved to be a fantastic kickstart to the season, setting up sailors well for the busy summer regatta circuit. By offering this program as an Invitational through an application process, our aim is to keep the standard high, while attracting dedicated and talented C420s to train in a collaborative setting.
All BEG C420 Applicants, including accepted sailors, are encouraged to apply and attend. Thanks to the partnership with OneUnited, attendees can count on a strong group of coaches with a variety of backgrounds where on-the-water sessions can include both large and small group training. Off-the-water, sailors will learn how to use gear optimization, advanced weather forecasting, and video analysis to dial-in advanced maneuvers and tuning concepts. The application and notification timeline will be the same as the Brooke Gonzalez Clinic: apply in February, invited sailors will be notified on March 15th. Sailors who would like to participate in both this clinic and the BEG need to apply for each clinic separately. Like the BEG, one application should be submitted for the double-handed team; we will not consider applications submitted by individual sailors.
Program description
The 4 day program will consist of lectures and on-the-water drills with an emphasis on boat-handling technique, boat speed, and strategy. This will be combined with information on what it takes to reach your goals in sailing. We maximize our time on the water and can find a variety of conditions…flat water, ocean swells, current, and breeze in all directions and speed.
Sail Newport will provide lunches each day and a dinner will be included with a special evening debrief; last year we hired a dedicated and experienced drone photographer to capture an afternoon’s worth of drills. In depth analysis of that footage was presented in a causal setting that made for some great knowledge sharing and collaboration.
The cost of the clinic is $540 per sailor.
When does it take place?
Sail Newport’s 2026 C420 Invitational Clinic will be held on June 22, 23, & 24. The daily schedule will run 10-5pm most days.
Apply between February 1st and 29th. Attendees will be notified on March 15th, 2025.
Who participates?
Experienced C420 racers between the ages of 14 and 18 participate in this clinic. While we encourage participation from all youth sailors in this category, our capacity is limited. The clinic’s low sailor to coach ratio is a key factor to both the quality of the experience and the safety of all participants.
