The Sail Newport offers a variety of youth race programming from March through October. In the “shoulder seasons” of Spring and Fall, most of these programs come in the form of weekend training and regattas. Summer is dominated by the Brenton Cove Racing Program, a group of 8-week travel teams supported in collaboration with the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. The core fleets used for these programs are Optimists, C420s and ILCAs (Lasers), but we also host clinics and regattas in other classes of boats. Our premier youth clinic, the Brooke E. Gonzalez Advanced Racing Clinic is held every June and invites sailors from Olympic Pathway classes. Sail Newport is also the home of four high school sailing teams: Rogers, Middletown, Portsmouth, and Prout as well as Salve Regina University’s collegiate team.

Youth Racing Clinics

Youth Racing Clinics Sail Newport’s youth racing clinics aim to help experienced sailors build knowledge and skills to take their racing to the next level. We will also have a few learn to race offerings. Our youngest group will come together for the RIOT Green Fleet Clinic, usually held in the Fall only. The next level up is an ongoing clinic series that make up the RIOT Development Team; these are sailors who are done with green fleet and itching to get more experience in the “big leagues” of Red, White, and Blue fleet optimist racing. We also be offer training opportunities for more advanced racers in the Optimist, ILCA, and C420 classes. For older, experienced sailors without much time racing, we recommend our Intro to High School and Intro to ILCA clinic series. Most sailors will have the opportunity to compete in Sail Newport hosted regatta at the end of each shoulder season. In early June we host the Sail Newport Youth Challenge Regatta and at the end of October its the Halloween Howl Regatta.

Brenton Cove Racing Program

The Brenton Cove Racing Program is customized for youth sailors serious about racing Optimists, Lasers and C420s. Each team will have their own accomplished coaches who will teach the skills necessary to thrive on the youth racing circuit. Every summer we have a great variety of regattas on the schedule, from the local NBYA regattas and scrimmages to class National and North American Championships. Sailors will learn to plan and strive to execute a goal-orientated summer sailing campaign.
