High School Sailing

Spring training and team practice

Sail Newport is proud to host high school sailing.  Our Sailing Center is home base for four area high school teams and continue to offer clinics, race training and regattas to support the growth of high school sailing.

Who Participates

In 2026 we serve as the home base for five area high schools.  This includes the Middletown High School/Narragansett High School collaborative team, Portsmouth High School, The Prout School and Newport’s Rogers High School.

What Happens

Our teams train collaboratively for ten weeks, with after-school practice happening three to four days a week. Most of the sailing takes place within the Brenton Cove just off the main docks of Sail Newport, but open water training in Narragansett Bay happens later in the season.

What we provide

Oversight
Sail Newport Race Programs Director, Nick Ewenson,  helps coordinate the teams and their coaches to ensure good collaboration and high standards.  Nick also helps maintain the fleet and also takes the lead in organizing Friday Night Lights and the Rhode Island State Championships.

Sailboats
We purchased 24 420e scholastic boats.  They are not state-of-the-art.  They are ideal!

Racing and training equipment
For the support of practice and scrimmages, we also provide coach powerboats, race committee equipment, and race marks.

Facility
Inside Sail Newport’s headquarters, each team has their own classroom and sailors use our changing rooms, showers, and restrooms.
