Brooke E. Gonzalez Advanced Racing Clinic
June 19-21, 2026
About Brooke
Sail Newport’s annual Advanced Racing Clinic is dedicated to the memory of Brooke Emmens Gonzalez.
“Excellence” is the word most often articulated when those that knew Brooke Gonzalez reminisce about her. Her life cut short in a tragic accident in 1997 at age 17, Brooke left a lasting impression on those that knew her. The Gonzalez Family and Sail Newport have acknowledged that; tenacity, sportsmanship, drive and determination are what set her apart from her peers.

2025 Brooke Gonzalez Recap
The twenty-fourth edition of Sail Newport’s Brooke Gonzalez Clinic brought together seventy-two top-notch youth sailors competing in four classes: the I420, C420, 29er, and ILCA6…three days of small and large group training and various lessons ashore were led by ten fantastic coaches:
I420: Elizabeth Kratzig and Skip Whyte
C420: Ali Blumenthal, Justin Assad, Lior Lavie, and Bill Healy
29ers: Richard Feeny and Caroline Atwood
ILCA6: Bern Noack and Anna Tobias
Thursday
Sailors were invited to come a day early before the clinic to set up their boats and sail out of the venue. About half the clinic came.
Friday
The morning came with very little wind. The C420 class was able to launch around 10:30 A.M., with the rest of the classes joining after lunch. The breeze filled and became steady for the rest of the day, creating a great kickoff to the clinic.
Saturday
This was our windiest day of the clinic, with a North Easterly breeze that built into the midafternoon, topping off in the high teens. It was much cooler with a steady light rain for the majority of the day, so the resilience of the sailors was put to the test. Most of the groups elected to have longer morning briefings and shore-side demos, with a longer training session in the afternoon. The 29ers headed out to the ocean, and their speed drills took them well to the east, near Easton’s Beach. The Lasers headed to the ocean as well, with the 420s electing to work on trapezoid boat handing drills in the bay.
Saturday Night
Speaker, Stephanie Roble, a two-time Olympian in the 49er FX, gave an insightful presentation that may have been many’s highlight of the clinic. She spoke about her campaigns being highly process-driven and shed light on the methodical detail her team put into tracking and improving performance. We learned how they utilized data to identify themes and develop a playbook. We heard about and saw examples of the daily journaling and data collection, and analysis that helped drive the near and longer-term goal setting. Mindfulness was another theme that was discussed; she shared some techniques to ensure focus and attention remain on the highest priority.
Sunday
The Brooke Gonzalez Award recognizes a sailor who demonstrates outstanding effort, desire, and willingness to learn. The coaches select finalists from their classes who exemplify these qualities that Brooke showed as a competitor, and then decide the winner. There were strong candidates in each class, but Noah Reischmann stood out as the most deserving sailor. Noah’s progression in 29er Sailing over the last few years is impressive, and he has been a leader in his region in Maine. Because of this, he proved to be such a great resource to everyone in our 29er group and was still making his progression gains each session. He asked good questions, was willing to share what he had learned, but pushed hard as a competitor on the water.
Thank You
American Magic, powered by Quantum Racing, who have been supporting this clinic for over a decade. Thanks to Sail Newport’s apparel sponsor Gill, who helped with prizes and gear for the sailors and coaches. Those coaches did an amazing job and brought a ton of passion and experience; we appreciate the energy you brought each day!
What are the clinic goals?
“Brooke’s qualities are the ones that Sail Newport wishes to instill in all of our young sailors that attend our Advanced Racing Clinic,” said Brad Read, Executive Director of Sail Newport. “This clinic will showcase the best in coaching from the collegiate and Olympic level. We will demand hard work and the highest degree of focus from all of the students in this clinic – championship values that Brooke demonstrated in her life.”
In 2001, Sail Newport and the family of Brooke Emmens Gonzalez launched an advanced racing clinic on the East Coast in her memory. Today we enjoy a reputation for the highest quality coaching and guest speakers, fabulous hospitality, and a range of sailing conditions and venues that only New England offers.
Program description
The 3 day program will consist of lectures and on-the-water drills with an emphasis on boat-handling technique, boat speed, and strategy. This will be combined with information on what it takes to reach your goals in sailing. We maximize our time on the water and can find a variety of conditions…flat water, ocean swells, current, and breeze in all directions and speed.
On Saturday night of the clinic, sailors are treated to a speaker from the highest levels of the sport. Prior speakers have included: Gary Jobson, Dean Brenner, 470 Gold Medalist Kevin Burnham, Olympic Team members, America’s Cup veterans, and Volvo Ocean Race competitors Ken Read and Jerry Kirby. In 2019, New York Yacht Club’s American Magic was represented by Terry Hutchinson and Andrew Campbell.
The most important thing to remember is that when you get here at Sail Newport, there will be no reason to leave. Meals, spare parts, etc. will be here. Our coaches want your undivided attention. The more you put into this clinic, the more you will advance because of it, So we expect full commitment from all sailor athletes!
“These youth sailors receive the highest level coaching from some of the best dinghy sailors and coaches in the country,” says Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport. “Emphasis is on speed producing factors and techniques that work on long courses where speed is at a premium.”
When does it take place?
Sail Newport’s 2026 Brooke E. Gonzalez Advanced Racing Clinic will be held on June 19, 20, and 21.
Apply between February 1st and 29th. Attendees will be notified on March 15th, 2026.
Participating Classes
Standard classes each year are ILCA 6, Club 420, I420, and 29er. New in 2024, we invited Nacra 15 sailors to join the fun! For 2025, ILCA 7s are welcome to apply. The BEG is a bring your own boat clinic; limited charter boats may be available for some classes.
Who participates?
Experienced dinghy racers between the ages of 14 and 18 participate in this clinic. While we encourage participation from all youth sailors in this category, our capacity is limited. The clinic’s low sailor to coach ratio is a key factor to both the quality of the experience and the safety of all participants.
For especially deep classes like the C420 and ILCA6, invited sailors will usually have gold fleet finishes at national-level regattas. Results in other classes like the ILCA4, Optimist, or High School sailing will not be weighted heavily in the selection process. The ILCA6 and C420 classes usually have sizable, unused waiting lists.
