Sail Newport Extends Racing Season for Youth Sailors
Sail Newport has announced a Fall Racing Clinic Series for youth sailors to start in September. Various race training from beginner to advanced racing is available on weekends for Optimist, C420, and ILCA sailors.
“Sailing in the fall in Newport is one of the best times of year to be on the water. The ocean is still warm, and students are coming off summer learning and practice, so we’re extending the season. There are great regattas to take advantage of in the Fall as well,” says Nick Ewenson, Sail Newport racing programs director.
Sail Newport has a strong line-up of veteran coaches who will work with youth sailors to develop their skills. Coaches include Joakim Karlsen(Providence, RI), Caden Buckley (Plymouth, MA), Luke Ingalls (Little Compton, RI), Amy Gross Kehoe (Falmouth, MA), Kathleen Tocke (Newport, RI/Miami, FL) and Matt Peter (Newport, RI).
Green Fleet Sailors Welcome
For beginner Optimist sailors, Amy Gross Kehoe will teach the foundations of racing sailboats. The “Optimist Green Fleet Clinic” is a two-day session on September 9 and 10.. Coach Kehoe will emphasize boat speed, more advanced boat handling, and the rules and processes to begin racing well.
Rhode Island Opti Team Development Program
Coach Kehoe will also teach experienced Green and White fleet sailors to prepare for Championship Fleet racing. This Sunday program runs between September 17 and October 22. The sailors will prepare for Sail Newport’s end-of-season Halloween Howl on October 28 and 29.
Training for More Advanced Opti Sailors
Building on the success of the past couple of years, Sail Newport teams up with Joakim Karlsen to offer two two-day clinics. These clinics are geared toward experienced championship fleet sailors with at least one season of red, white, or blue fleet regatta experience.
Luke Ingalls also joins the coaching staff to focus on Optimist-specific tuning, boat handling, and racing tactics. Students can expect rigorous training with post-practice video analysis each day.
For the sailors who enter the USODA’s Atlantic Coast Championship (September 16-17, Bellport, NY) or Sail Newport’s Halloween Howl the last weekend of October, coaching is also available for the regatta race days. Regatta coaching includes one entire practice day before racing starts in each venue.
Advanced C420 Racing
This clinic is for youth sailors who have a minimum of one entire season of racing experience in the C420.
The clinic will utilize the trapeze and spinnaker to focus on speed and big course racing. Coach Ewenson emphasizes that sailors should be able to race in most conditions.
Skippers and crew should register together, but a single sailor may be able to be matched with a sailing partner through Sail Newport. Coaching for the Sail Newport Halloween Howl is also available as an add-on to the clinic season. Clinic One takes place October 14 and 15, Clinic Two is scheduled for October 21 and 22.
Intermediate C420 Clinic for Girls
Sailing fast using the trapeze and spinnaker is the goal of this clinic, coached by Kathleen Tocke. One entire season of racing experience in the C420 is required. Girls with or without a sailing partner are encouraged to register. The training opportunity takes place September 23 and 24. Additional coaching is also available for the Halloween Howl for teams.
Intro to High School Sailing
High school and eighth-grade sailors interested in racing are invited. The clinic will teach in high school/collegiate 420 boats on October 7 and 8. Participants should have strong sailing skills as a prerequisite but will learn more advanced boat handling and techniques. Tactics and strategy will also be introduced, emphasizing the short-course racing style of high school competition.
Sailors will be rotated each day to learn both helm and crew positions. This course is open and also beneficial for those already in high school racing.
Advanced ILCA 6(Laser Radial) Training for ILCA ACCs
This program is built to prepare for the class Atlantic Coast Championship (ACC) at Hyannis Yacht Club on September 16 and 17.
For two Sundays (September 3 and September 10) leading up to the ACCs, Sail Newport Coach Tocke will host afternoon practices to train for the event. Experienced youth ILCA sailors are invited to register with at least one summer of racing completed.

Financial aid is available to those who qualify. Charter boats may be available for some of the racing clinics.
“Youth racing is a challenging but rewarding sport. Sailing is where the natural outdoors, technology and self-reliance meet. Especially in racing, young sailors learn how to prepare, take care of their equipment, learn about the weather and tide and how to make decisions,” says Nick Ewenson, Sail Newport racing programs director. “It’s rewarding to see the self-confidence and valuable life-lessons that come from sailing a boat,” Ewenson adds.
