Day 3 of Sail Newport’s 5th Grade Vacation Week Program was another activity-filled day! Students focused on hinges and levers between marine life and boats! Students started the day with an ongoing experiment of how oysters from Narragansett Bay can purify the water. Luckily, the water is pretty clear at the moment so the oyster didn’t have much work to do! Students learned the anatomy of a clam by doing the Sailors for the Sea Clam Jigsaw and created their own clams out of paper. Students referenced real clams on their tables to identify the location of each part of the clam and also the exact colors to use. To wrap up mollusks, students got their hands dirty to talk about how some mollusks can be invasive when brought into new waters by unwashed boats. After some time at the beach, students learned how an opti rudder, clam, and fishtail are all connected as levers! Students ended their day by building paper fish and designing their own tails and fin shapes. We are excited to welcome these students back for our April Vacation Program where we will be mainly sailing.
