5th graders had a fun first day! We started the day with some games to feel a sense of connection and belonging to each other, Sail Newport, and the ocean. Then we got right into building our tinfoil boats! Sailors used trial and error to eventually create a boat that would hold 300 pennies! Next, we connected our understanding of boats that hold stuff to plankton and their ability to be semi-submerged in the water column. To prep for the build, we looked at plankton under the microscope and learned more about the importance of plankton to all life on Earth!
